| I know lots of you are from America and I'm going to New York in July/August for like...5-6 days.
I need to know where to go!
I know the obvious tourist attractions and then stuff like Macy's, FAO Awesome Top shop, Tiffany's etc...
But where can I find some really cute little shops which will have some cute little bits of jewellery and stuff that I won't find at home? You know like are there places in Chinatown or whatever?
Our hotel is on tenth avenue at 49th street if that makes sense to anyone or is relevant...
any other advice about going to new york is awesome too.

| Umm, well my mom and sister just got back from NYC for college visiting..
I suggest:: -- Burgers & Cupcakes (It's a restaurant where they only make burgers and cupcakes. Apparently it's REALLY good. Sorry that's off topic, but... look it up on Google.) -- Anywhere in the Soho area. Tons and tons of stores/shops. GREAT for shopping...
Hmm.. I'll let you know if I think of any more places..

MOMA MOMA MOMA. it was amazing. Yeah, republic is AMAZING. its really cheap and super-classy. its in union square, so if you can make your way there (it'll be in any tourist guidebook) i'm sure you can find the restaraunt. Also, if you're into art, definitely go to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) or the Metropolitan Museum. Personally, I went to CBGB's, which is sadly now closed, but the neighborhood around it is really neat and punk-y. Lots of thrift shops! if you're into ethnic food, NYC isg great, I ate at an afghani restaraunt. also, since it is summer, be on the lookout for street festivals of all kinds- they're great places for unique experiences. |

| ahhh, i know this is a really old thread, but i just have to respond-
jeebus, the met is overwhelming. you will walk in, pee your pants, and then have to leave because you will decide you can't see everything, so why see anything at all? i'm kidding, but seriously, plan a lot of time there. also, when you go, be sure you know for sure what you want to see. my friend and i walked in and couldnt decide what we wanted to see, so we just picked the nearest thing- egyptian art- and wasted like 4 hours in that section instead of being able to see things we were really interested in. plan plan plan!
oooh yeah, i got excited about the H&M too, but never got to go! i was devastated! i mean, we have one near my house, but its tiny! not anything like the 4 story one in NY!
honestly, i wasnt too impressed by the big department stores, but that is because i like little boutiques a lot more. also because i have a macy's right near my house too.
also, seriously DO NOT buy some things, like chocolate-covered bananas on a stick, from street vendors. some food is not made for walking and eating, especially when the chocolate melts all over your clothes and shoes, and then the banana falls off the stick!! lol.
and yes, the accent is real, but maybe not as prevalent as you might think. you'll definitely hear it (my old softball coach was from NY and had the BEST accent) but not everyone there talks like that |

| I saw a show on TV recently about this Aussie guy (Jules Lund) in New York and trying out all these street vendor's food. IT LOOKED SO AWESOME! I wish we had that in Australia. |

| what, street vendors? you dont have them? that is strange.
i know that where i live, on tuesdays and thurdays, between 11 and 1 pm, there is this old indian woman who sells the BEST homemade indian food. its a shame i never go down to where she is, because it is seriously delicious |

| New York would be amazing. Street Vendors would also be amazing, hahaha. I can't even fathom a place like New York, is it like five cities within a bigger area? 'Cause if not, that's one city with twice the population of my country. Wtf. | |

| What might be confusing you is it's 'split up' into five burroughs.
So it's not like, five cities, it's just split up into five sections.

| uhg... NYC is my life! i want to show you everywhere!!! lol FIRST... st. marks. obviously you need to go to pom frittes, then trash and vaudville, OH and the dumpling man! (you're going to gain like, 20lbs...no wonder we americans are fatties) uhg! then like, coopers. OMG...BEARD PAPA! ..walk to american apparel, then THINK cafe!! then to that "cheapie t-'s" place and then to adriano goldschmeid, flying a's, OMG....KID ROBOT!!!! i want you to go there!! ahh... i want you to go everywhere that i love! lol
and obviously anthropologie. BUT.. i want you to go to washington sq., and make your way to union sq. from there! (quick walk..these places are all really close to one another) union squ has a really great energy, especially at night. alot of kids hang out there.. and the farmers market!!! uhg!! and there's a jamba juice, too! (get the chocolate moo'd or the strawberry nirvana) hmmmm...also, there are some great restraunts in the area. near union sq. is a place called the Gotham restraunt. i love them! also, (not THAT far from there..) is a restraunt called Zoe. they have good food, too. BUT!!! you HAVE to go to Serendipity III for frozen hotchocolate!!! and bloomies!!
i cant think of any other places at the moment. maybe the urban outfitters off of stuyvestant? they're fun! lots of cheap stuff!! i hope i didn't post too late! |

| there's actually an H&M right in union sq.!
uhg...i love tourists! i want to share all the good stores with you!!! i want to take you all over!!! lol! the city is my LIFE!
and duh...you have to go to times square....because you wouldn't be a proper tourist if you didn't! stand in the middle of the street, take pictures in your "i heart ny" t-shirt. eat "nuts 4 nuts" (which smell way better than they taste...believe me) BE A TOURIST!
you can also go on the statue of liberty boat ride, see the brooklyn promenade..etc, those are pretty touristy. brooklyn promenade is nice though. |
